After Reading

  • Guided reading ball game:

The teacher will have a few beach balls. Word prompts will be listed on these beach balls. For example, What does a judge do? What is the purpose of having an advocator? The kids will then throw the ball around the room, which, for every question their thumb lands on, they will have to answer.

  • Comprehension activity

Kids will pick one thing from the text and write about a person's experience with this topic. Once the assignment is finished, they have a few choices regarding what to do with it. They can choose to share what they wrote, place it in the "non-share box" (this is a place where they can write their feelings and not have to worry about anyone invading their privacy), or take it home with them.

  • What would you change?

In this activity, kids will list what they wish the book had covered. Did it not discuss something they wished it had? Did it go more into depth about a specific topic?

  • Discussion Circles Objective:

Encourage critical thinking and self-expression. How It Works: Divide students into small groups. Assign each group a self-advocacy topic (e.g., speaking up in class, asking for accommodations). Have them discuss their experiences, challenges, and strategies related to that topic

"It's like a fun game where we learn more about important stuff!"

  • Comprehension activity:

"We write about stuff that happened to us!"

"It's like telling our own stories."

"We can share it or keep it just for ourselves."

  • What would you change?

"We get to be book editors!"

"We list things we wished the book talked about."

 "It's like advising the author!"

  • Discussion Circles Objective:

"We got to talk to everyone about the text."

"I got to hear ideas from others I didn't think of."

"People thought what I had to say was interesting."
